Signs like this make me sad. This picture is doing the rounds on Facebook so I thought I would repost it here.
There are some bars in Korea that have a ‘no foreigners’ allowed policy. The one above is taken from a Ho Bar in Gangnam.
Ho Bar is probably one of the biggest bar chains in Seoul. It’s kind of like a UK Wetherspoons…but louder. Me and my friends have been turned away on the grounds of being foreign by the same bar in Gangnam before. A few months ago I was also turned away from another Ho bar in Seoul because I am a foreigner. It made me laugh to think about what would happen if we put up a ‘No Asians allowed’ sign in the window of an English pub.
There are still Ho bars that allow foreigners (such as in Hongdae) but after that, I have been boycotting every Ho bar I see. I don’t think I could give my custom to a place banning people on the grounds of their nationality or ethnicity.
I’ve worked at a Ho Bar in Shinchon near Yonsei and we had to put this policy in place for foreigners who weren’t attending the Yonsei Korean program because ya’ll would come in and do some stupid shit like break a bottle of Jack Daniels over someone’s head because you were drunk (we had to close early that day and I had to clean that shit up), we were getting multiple complaints from women that foreign men were hitting on them excessively to the point where even after being told no multiple times they would grab the wrists of the women calling them names like whore, and because, generally, ya’ll keep forgetting that it’s fucking Korea and forget your manners and etiquette.
Shit we’re losing business, do you think we want to close off the bars from foreigners? But if we don’t ya’l do some stupid shit that makes it impossible to do business.
Also if you’re really considering shit that ya’ll did to yourself as something equal to racial discrimination in the US you really need to stop.
I can attest to foreigners making unwanted comments at Korean students, especially female students, thinking that they won’t understand you and calling us racial slurs in and around Shinchon.
The foreigner men harassing korean women is a BIG one. Remember the korean woman who was assaulted on camera by white men at a club??? This is one of the consequences of asian fetishization, and i dont blame korean clubs from barring foreigners, especially men. There is so much abuse coming from these guys because they believe asian women are submissive weak women who cannot fight back, and they know they can get away with it.
Not exclusive for straight bars or clubs or lounges either, nearly every single club you go to on Homo Hill is infested with wannabe sexpat middle age white men who go there and troll in small gangs, any Asian men who they feel will be receptive. They mostly go after boys who are obviously just legal, boys who are drunk / high, or ones that go there alone and linger alone.
My boyfriend and I are incapable of going out for drinks without some half drunk palefaced fuck coming up to us and trying to hit on us in slurred and broken Korean, telling me / my boyfriend to “forget the small chinky dick and get some white cock”, trying to touch us and generally being very rapey and predatory and fucking disgusting.
Foreigners PLAGUE establishments here in Korea. They make businesses lose money and clients and harass the locals nonstop.
kimchi-monster, take your fucking white feelings and get out. If you expats were able to control yourselves, maybe places wouldn’t have to go as far as to do this.
Safe spaces aren’t something you can police. What? You’re a good guy? You don’t cause trouble in these bars? Great. Good for you. I’ve never sexually assaulted a woman you think that gives me a right to go into a women’s only space? If I see a ‘No Foreigners’ sign I’ve just I’ve got respect their wishes.
Grow up. Move on. Interject when you see white people fucking around and tell them it’s not cool. Be a part of the solution, don’t complain about those who are trying to make their home a better and safer place.
